The arrival of the 21st century in Somontano marks a new historic moment defined by the arrival of new wineries, capital investment, growth in production and marketing, and recognition of the quality of its wines by the most prestigious specialised guides and by consumers.
Its success is the result of all this and of joint work by the winegrowers, the wineries and the Regulatory Board in order to offer wine lovers a product to enjoy: of quality, unique, versatile, in which the territory, besides being an essential element, is a first-class tourist destination.

On the Somontano Wine Route you will find great architectural works, small treasures, wineries with history, family wineries, old wineries and modern ones, very special wineries, all different, which is why we recommend that you always visit more than one.

The land and the climate
The features that show the richness and resources of the designation of origin are its wineries.
Twenty-nine winegrowing companies that transform the fifteen grape varieties from four thousand hectares of plantation into excellent wines.
The wineries' business fabric has devoted strong investments to vineyards, facilities and human resources, which in turn has contributed notably to revitalising the territory, generating employment, settling population, improving quality of life, turning this winegrowing area into one of the most prestigious in the country and promoting the natural, historical and cultural richness of Somontano through the connection of its wines with the territory from which they are born.
Zones
Located in the heart of the province of Huesca and at the foot of the Pyrenees, Somontano is a privileged place that brings together the perfect conditions for producing great wines.
Microclimates
A temperate climate with temperature contrasts between day and night, vineyards located between the plain and the mountain. Altitude and latitude that give the wines a very special character, a fantastic balance between fruit and acidity.
Somontano is much more than a place. It is so because the values of love for the land, character, excellence, non-conformism, origin and passion for work, combined with a unique territory in which the grapes give the best of themselves as the raw material of great wines, have forged the path of this Designation.
The Somontano Designation of Origin has 15 grape varieties, both local and foreign, from more than 4,000 hectares of plantation. They are the raw material from which its excellent wines are born.
SOMONTANO WINES
Our wines speak of territory, of the 4,000 hectares of vineyards, mostly spread over small plots where the vine shares space with almond, olive or fig trees. The wine tells us of the altitude of our vineyards, between 350 and 1,000 metres above sea level; it tells us of its location, below the Pyrenees and the Sierra de Guara.
Aromatic, fresh wines, with intensity and a fantastic acidity, surprising wines with personality.Among the varieties grown in our territory we find some native ones such as Parraleta, Moristel or the white Alcañón, and others such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon among the reds, or Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer among the whites, which after more than 120 years in our territory are varieties to which Somontano lends its special character, “somontanised” varieties such as the whites garnacha blanca, macabeo, riesling, sauvignon blanc and other reds such as tempranillo, syrah, garnacha tinta or pinot noir.
