The D.O. Condado de Huelva is one of the oldest Designations of Origin in Spain, established as such in 1933 and updated in 2002 and 2009 to include the Condado de Huelva vinegar designation. The DO Condado de Huelva carries a very important historical heritage; this Designation began its viticulture in the era of the Tartessians, the Greeks, the Romans and later the Muslims, who were indulgent towards the cultivation and making of wine.

A unique area for unique wines

The wine-growing area currently protected by the Condado de Huelva Designation of Origin covers a broad district located in the south-east of the province of Huelva, bordering: to the north, the district of El Andévalo; to the south, the Atlantic Ocean; to the east, the Doñana National Park; and to the west, the provincial capital of Huelva. It stretches across the plain of the lower Guadalquivir, from the watershed marked by its tributary, the Guadiamar, to the estuary of the Tinto. It reaches 18 municipalities: Almonte, Beas, Bollullos Par del Condado, Bonares, Chucena, Gibraleón, Hinojos, La Palma del Condado, Lucena del Puerto, Manzanilla, Moguer, Niebla, Palos de la Frontera, Rociana del Condado, San Juan del Puerto, Trigueros, Villalba del Alcor and Villarrasa.

The land and the climate

The Production Area of the wines protected by the «Condado de Huelva» Designation of Origin is made up of the lands located in the municipalities of the Condado de Huelva.

Zones

The vineyard of the area protected by the P.D.O. spreads over flat or gently undulating land. In general, these are neutral or slightly basic soils, loamy and of medium fertility, with areas of unsurpassable quality for growing the vine.

Microclimates

The DO Condado de Huelva has a mild climate in winter and spring and long, warm summers with a clear Atlantic influence, with an average annual temperature in the district of 18ºC and relative humidity ranging between 60% and 80%.

Across the nearly 3,300 hectares of vineyards, the main and native grape variety planted is the Zalema grape, followed by Palomino Fino, Listán B, Garrido Fino, Muscat of Alexandria, Pedro Ximénez and the newly authorised Syrah, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

The vineyard of this area rises over flat but slightly undulating land, with neutral or slightly basic soils, loamy and of medium fertility, with areas of enviable quality for growing the vine.

Orange wine

The Condado de Huelva Designation of Origin has a unique wine with a long tradition, orange wine, which is characterised by the natural setting where it is produced and aged, oak butts of the finest solera, notably and singularly influenced by the proximity of the Doñana National Park. Only these wines, aromatised with bitter orange peel through the maceration process, may use the Vino Naranja del Condado de Huelva Designation.
