Wine Tourism in D.O. Tacoronte Acentejo

Tacoronte-Acentejo was the first wine region in the Canary Islands to obtain designation of origin recognition in 1992. It extends across the municipalities of Tacoronte, Santa Úrsula, Tegueste, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Victoria de Acentejo, El Sauzal, La Laguna and part of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

A unique area for unique wines

Located in the north-east of Tenerife, it is made up of the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, ElRosario, Tegueste, Tacoronte, El Sauzal, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Victoria de Acentejo, Santa Úrsula and the Anaga subzone. It is the most densely vine-cultivated area in the Canary Islands. Generally, the vine is planted on terraces, on slopes facing north and towards the sea. Its soils are clayey, rich and fertile.

The land and the climate

The plantations are on terraces, on steep slopes facing north and towards the sea. The soils are reddish in colour, rich in organic matter, with a low proportion of lime and abundant nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Zones

The vineyards are located between 100 and 1,000 metres of altitude above sea level and make good use of the sun and the volcanic soil on which they develop. The plantations are on terraces, on steep slopes facing north and towards the sea. The soils are reddish in colour, rich in organic matter, with a low proportion of lime and abundant nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Sun, breeze and volcanic soil beside the sea in a diverse, benign and stable climate are the natural and unique ingredients that combine the surprising personality of our wines.

Microclimates

Except for exceptional incursions of the scorching African gale, the northern coastal region is subject to the action of northerly winds which, as long as the influence of altitude does not become apparent, determine a mild and pleasant climate of great thermal regularity: the daily fluctuation is barely perceptible and the annual one reaches at most about 7º C. Although the sky may be cloudy and the atmosphere heavily laden with humidity (60% relative humidity), rainfall is scarce, as the mild temperatures prevent the condensation of this humidity.
