Wine tourism in D.O. Bullas

The production area of the wines protected by the Protected Designation of Origin «Bullas» is made up of the lands located in the following municipalities of the Region of Murcia: Bullas, Cehegín, Mula, Pliego and Ricote.

The land and the climate

In the PDO Bullas, more than 60% of the vineyards are located at altitudes exceeding 600 metres above sea level, at the foot of the mountain ranges.

Areas

The terrain is of rugged topography with altitude rising from south to north, which is why the soils on which the cultivation of the D.O. Bullas develops are very different in depth and texture. This topography gives rise to small valleys with brown-calcareous soils and limestone crust on the hillsides; and alluvial soils in the centre of the valleys, where we can also find flint with highly variable soil characteristics.

Microclimates

The climatic characteristics notably influence the quality of the wines. The ecosystem to which the Monastrell vine variety belongs is located at an altitude between 600 and 900 metres above sea level, with climatic influences from the Mediterranean and from the interior of the peninsula. The temperatures recorded in the area are suitable for the development of the vegetative and productive cycle of the vineyards, especially the Monastrell, although extreme temperatures are occasionally observed, ranging from frosts in spring to sunstroke in summer.

Reds: Monastrell, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Garnacha, Garnacha Tintorera and Petit Verdot.

Whites: Macabeo, Airén, Chardonnay, Malvasía, Moscatel, Moscatel de Grano Menudo and Sauvignon Blanc

The monastrell

Monastrell is the main variety of the Bullas Designation of Origin.

The grape varieties that best adapt to the climate and soil type of the territories covered by the D.O. Bullas are fourteen, among red and white varieties.

With medium-large, dense and highly compact clusters due to its abundant flowering. The grapes are small, spherical in profile and with a cross-section.

With a thick and firm blue-black skin, rich in anthocyanins, very fleshy, soft pulp, and a small amount of tannins.

Of very vertical bearing, it shows late budding, upright habit, and slow, late ripening compared to other red varieties such as Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah.

It has a powerful root system, capable of spreading easily, being a very resistant plant, able to withstand both drought and frost well.
