D.O. MentridaD.O. MentridaThe Méntrida Designation of Origin as we know it now was created in 1976. Located in the north of the province of Toledo (Spain), with the town of Méntrida as its designation centre and the town of Fuensalida in the same province as the administration headquarters.
The Méntrida Designation of Origin includes 53 municipalities in the north of Toledo, bordering to the north with Madrid and Ávila, at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos and crossed by the Alberche River and to the east of the Tagus River.
The 53 municipalities that make up this designation of origin belong to three agricultural regions of the province, which are Talavera, Torrijos and La Sagra-Toledo. We could say that the most important towns within the designation are Escalona, Maqueda, Fuensalida, Almorox, Casarrubios del Monte, Camarena and Méntrida itself.
The production surface according to the latest data covers some 13,400 hectares of vineyard at an average altitude of 650 metres above sea level.
The PDO Méntrida wines recall a centuries-old tradition, viticultural culture and good craftsmanship.
For the most part the vineyard occupies soils typical of cereal crops, although there are excellent areas of sandy substrate of granitic origin on hillsides and rugged areas that are very optimal for the cultivation of quality vineyards. Being an area with soils poor in calcium, it is ideal for the production of the garnacha variety, the predominant grape in this designation.
A typically continental climate, with very cold winters and hot summers until, once the veraison arrives, the nights become cool, enabling an optimal ripening of the grapes which, under the natural protection of the Sierra de Gredos, gives a special character to our wines.
Garnacha is the main variety of the Méntrida Designation of Origin, and represents approximately 80% of the vine production. The rest is complemented in smaller quantities by the other red and white varieties covered by the regulation of the Regulatory Council.
White: Albillo, Chardonnay, Verdejo, Viura or Macabeo and Sauvignon Blanc.
Red: Syrah, Garnacha, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo (Cencibel), Cabernet Sauvignon, Graciano, Petit Verdot and Merlot.
In Méntrida the references to vineyards date back to the 12th century, whose cultivation reached its splendour in the Spain of the Habsburgs. Its vineyards grow watered by the Alberche river, in the shade of the Sierra de Gredos, in the province of Toledo. With a rigorous continental climate of long, cold winters and hot summers with scarce rainfall, added to sandy soils of granitic origin, its vines give rise to very fine wines. At present, Tempranillo, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, among others, have been introduced, complementing the Garnacha, predominant but of very low production.
