The D.O. Montsant is a land in which the landscape and the wine have gone hand in hand throughout the centuries and where even the old vines, tended like true treasures, have History with a capital H. A History that, with renewed strength and enthusiasm, is moving towards the future.

A unique region for unique wines

In the D.O. Montsant everything coexists, from large cooperatives to family ventures, including private wineries of various sizes and producers who make wines from their own vineyards using the facilities of other wineries.

While the D.O. Montsant encompassed 28 wineries when it was born, there are now more than 50 wineries coexisting. Despite the structural differences between them, they all share the same objective: to make quality wines that speak of this land.

The wines of the D.O. Montsant are the fruit of a centuries-old tradition and of current academic knowledge. Artisan products in which the hand of man intervenes throughout the entire production process, a process that is the result of an unwavering balance between the field and the winery.

The land and the climate

All this geological diversity translates into a very varied geomorphology, with mountain ranges, valleys, plains and terraces that give rise to a unique and singular landscape.Moreover, this very particular geology directly influences the formation of the soils of the D.O. Montsant areaand contributes to characterising its climatic diversity.

Zones

In this area there is a great diversity of geological rocks and sediments. Thus, we can find everything from igneous rocks (granites of the Falset-Marçà area) to metamorphic rocks represented by slate, passing through sedimentary rocks, such as the conglomerates of the Sierra de Montsant or the different limestone ranges that surround the whole territory.

Microclimates

The climatology of the D.O. Montsant is marked fundamentally by the rugged profile of the mountains, the influences of the Ebro river and the winds from the sea. That is why, despite being a Mediterranean climate, it is marked by a certain continentality. On the other hand, given the orography of the area, an infinite number of microclimates can be found, which mean that each viticultural plot has special characteristics.

The vineyards of the D.O. Montsant are planted between 50 metres above sea level in the lowest areas, and 700 metres in the highest areas.

Among the grape varieties authorised by the D.O. Montsant, 4 stand out that can be considered historic and predominant. In the case of the whites these are the white grenache and the Macabeo, and in the case of the reds the red grenache and the carignan, which represent more than 65% of the vines of Montsant.

Grenache and carignan, the essence of Montsant

Red grenache

A variety well adapted to heat and drought. With a very sensual aromatic profile, it produces wines of great complexity and well structured. Notes of citrus fruits with a background of balsamics and spices are characteristic of the red grenache. On the other hand, due to the high concentrations of sugars in over-ripening and to its oxidative capacity, the red grenache is used in the production of fortified wines.
