V.T. MallorcaThe passion of Mallorca's wine producers has always come from the same place: the land and the vineyard. Its producers tirelessly seek to make original, unique wines that stir emotion.
Since the 1990s, the wine sector committed to improving quality, paying greater attention to the crops and boosting and renovating the wineries. In recent years we have made a commitment to recovering and protecting the island's native grape varieties that make our wines unique. In Mallorca we are contemporary but we draw more than ever on our history, on the tradition of an island with values that have endured over time. We want to preserve our wine heritage, and to keep creating wines and stories that stir emotion and that transcend to the following generations.
The area of grape production, winemaking and bottling of wine entitled to the “vino de la tierra Mallorca” designation comprises all the municipalities of the island of Mallorca. Only wines made entirely with grapes produced in Mallorca and packaged in the production area are entitled to use this designation.
The island has optimal conditions for the cultivation of the grape and a climate that maximises the quality of the product and enhances the ecological potential. The vineyards extend from sea level up to 500 metres in altitude.Beaches and cliffs beside the sea, mountains and more or less rugged plains. The diversity of landscapes makes the island of Mallorca a unique place for wine production.
The Mallorcan climate is typically Mediterranean, mild, marked by a long, dry and hot summer (above 30 ºC). In winter the temperatures are moderately low (rarely below 5 ºC), with snow falling in the highest areas of the Serra de Tramuntana. The humidity level is generally high. Rainfall, which tends to be of a stormy type, is concentrated in autumn. Precipitation reaches an average of 440 mm of rain per year.
Protected native varieties:
Giró ros: This is a variety that provides acidity, a moderate alcohol content and a fine, delicate aromatic profile with aromas of stone fruit, such as peach, and of white fruit, such as pear. It produces fresh, very balanced wines with a good ageing capacity.
Premsal blanc: It generates fresh wines of marked fruity character, with aromas reminiscent of citrus and white fruit. Depending on the terrain, we find on the palate a very interesting saline and mineral sensation. The acidity is moderate and the alcohol content generally low.
Red grapes
Protected native varieties:
Manto negro: Together with callet, these are the dominant native red varieties. It is a grape rich in sugars that gives rise to wines of medium colour, intense aromas of ripe red fruits, high alcohol content, moderate to low acidity and soft tannins.
Callet: It gives rise to wines of low alcohol content and moderate-low acidity. With a very thin skin, its wines generally show little colour. Its nose is delicate and elegant with notes of strawberry, violets and spices. On the palate it is fresh, light and elegant.
Gorgollassa: A native variety recovered in 2001 after being considered extinct for decades. It has a low alcohol content and a moderate acidity. It presents a high aromatic intensity with fruity and floral notes and a light smoky touch. Of appreciable lightness, these are reds that turn out very refreshing.
Fogoneu: A variety widely cultivated in the past. Nowadays it is used for blends with other varieties, providing freshness, since it has a medium-high acidity. The alcohol content is not very high and it shows good colouring. On the nose, black and red fruits and the spicy and floral touches stand out.
